Euro area financial corporations engaged in lending ( FCLs)

This section provides statistical data and background information on the assets and liabilities of euro area financial corporations engaged in lending (FCLs).

Euro area financial corporation engaged in lending - balance sheet (ECB Data Portal)

These statistics present the assets and liabilities of the financial corporations engaged in lending to households and non-financial corporations (FCLs) resident in the euro area, which is a sub-sector of “Other financial intermediaries, except insurance corporations and pension funds” (OFIs), S.125, in the European System of Accounts 2010 (ESA 2010).

The statistics are reported by the national central banks (NCBs) to the ECB in accordance with Part 4 of Annex I of Guideline ECB/2021/12 on financial intermediaries other than monetary financial institutions.

The statistics on FCLs are at annual frequency and are available dating back to the end of 2010.

The asset side typically represents the loan portfolio of FCLs and other assets. There are four asset categories, as defined in the Guideline ECB/2021/12 on monetary and financial statistics: loans, equity, debt securities held and remaining assets. There are also four categories on the liability side: deposits and loans taken, debt securities issued, capital and reserves and remaining liabilities.

Outstanding amounts, or stock data, refer to the value of the assets and liabilities at the end of the reference period (annual, either to the last working day or the last calendar day, depending on national practice).

Changes in outstanding amounts between two periods can be due to transactions, price revaluations, exchange rate changes in the case of instruments denominated in currencies other than euro, or statistical reclassifications.
