Investigation phase

Following the digital euro experimentation work carried out by the ECB and the euro area national central banks, we launched the investigation phase of the project. The phase will last for two years, from October 2021 to October 2023.

We will analyse how a digital euro can be designed and distributed to retailers and the public. Our analysis will also look at how a digital euro can impact the retail payments market and what changes to European legislation might be needed.

Once the investigation phase is over, we will decide whether to start developing a digital euro.

In this section of our website you will find materials for professionals working in the financial sector:

Launch of the project

In July 2021 we decided to launch a digital euro investigation project. This does not mean that we will necessarily issue a digital euro but rather we will look further into the possible scope and design of one, and how it could be distributed.

Everything you need to know about a digital euro

A digital euro would still be a euro, like banknotes but digital. It would be an electronic form of money issued by the ECB and the euro area national central banks, and accessible to retailers and the public.
