Digital euro pilot
ON THIS PAGE
What we learn from the pilot will ensure that the digital euro, if it is introduced, is fully equipped to meet the needs of all Europeans.
The ECB aims to be ready for a potential first issuance of the digital euro during 2029, assuming the digital euro Regulation is adopted in 2026. To make the technical and operational preparations and lay the groundwork for a seamless and secure launch, we plan to run a 12‑month pilot starting in the second half of 2027.
The ECB will only decide whether to issue a digital euro once the Regulation has been adopted, and the Eurosystem’s preparation work will remain flexible to ensure it stays aligned with the legislative process.
The latest on the digital euro pilot
We invited euro area payment service providers to apply for the digital euro pilot and received over 50 applications. This gives us a strong basis for conducting the pilot as intended. The applications, which came from both small and large banks and included acquiring and distributing payment service providers, offer a good balance of business models together with broad country coverage. Screening is underway and the outcome of the selection process will be announced in July.
