Workshop announcement and call for papers:
Launching Workshop of the ECB-CFS Research Network on
Capital Markets and Financial Integration in Europe
at the ECB, 29-30 April, 2002.
The European Central Bank and the Center for Financial Studies are soliciting submissions of papers for a workshop launching the
ECB-CFS Research Network on "Capital Markets and Financial Integration in Europe". The Network Initiative focuses on financial integration and the evolution of the European Financial System. The organisers seek to bring together central bankers, policy makers, and academics interested in the field. Empirical, institutional and relevant theoretical research will be considered.
This first workshop will be held at the ECB in Frankfurt/Main on 29-30 April 2002.
Topics
The submission of research papers in the following fields is especially encouraged:
European Debt Market Structures
- Development of markets for bank credit and corporate bonds in Europe, including determinants of international bank mergers, changes in bond portfolios, aspects of market liquidity, changes in lending patterns
- Changes in bank-firm relationships and lending patterns, as well as their implications for expected changes in financial institutions' risk taking and competitiveness
- Macroeconomic determinants of bond yields in the euro area and the microstructure of both government bond and corporate bond markets
- Measures of financial integration and obstacles for integration in these markets, such as differences in legal systems and market structures
- Identifying changes in the character of the European financial system (e.g. the changing role of financial intermediaries and markets) and its implications for financial system stability and bond market indicators
Financial Linkages Between Europe, the US, and Japan
- Financial integration between the three major currency blocks and the role of financial flows (changes in international portfolio investments).
- Asset market linkages between the three main currency blocks and whether they have changed after EMU and why
- Foreign exchange market microstructure
Selected papers will have a discussant and will be placed on the

Expenses for travel (economy class round-trip) and accomodation will be covered for academic speakers.
Submission Information
Research papers or extended abstracts (both electronic MS Word or Pdf versions only) should be sent to Jutta Heeg ( Heeg@ifk-cfs.de ) and Sabine Wiedemann ( Sabine.Wiedemann@ecb.int ) by 15 March 2002. Decision on acceptance will be communicated by 1 April 2002.
