PRESS RELEASE

Eurotower to house ECB’s banking supervision staff

9 November 2013

The European Central Bank (ECB) has decided to continue to rent one of its current buildings, the Eurotower, to house its supervisory staff. This decision means that the ECB will maintain its link with the Eurotower in Frankfurt, together with the large euro symbol in front of it, which has become something of a landmark not only for the ECB but also for the city of Frankfurt.

The new ECB premises, currently under construction in Frankfurt’s Ostend district and designed at a time when the supervisory tasks had not yet been envisaged, will not have sufficient space to accommodate the 1,000 or so additional staff needed for the ECB to carry out its new tasks.

The ECB reviewed a number of options for premises that would provide a suitable working environment at short notice, and which would meet the logistical and operational requirements, while limiting the overall costs. It concluded that the Eurotower would be the best option.
