ECB publishes a book entitled “A strategic vision for statistics: challenges for the next 10 years”
The European Central Bank (ECB) is today publishing a book entitled “A strategic vision for statistics: challenges for the next 10 years”. The book contains the proceedings of the Fourth ECB Conference on Statistics, held on 24 and 25 April 2008 in Frankfurt. The aim of the publication is to contribute to further enhancing economic, monetary and financial statistics, thereby improving market transparency and the availability of relevant aggregate information to the financial markets and the general public. During the conference, the emphasis was on the ongoing process of closing some remaining gaps in the ECB’s statistics, while still keeping costs and the reporting burden to a minimum. These conflicting demands call for a strategic vision which is shared by policy-makers, as well as other users and compilers of statistics. In addition, the book addresses the communication of statistics, which should ensure that both professional users and the public at large understand the meaning of the facts and figures that are disseminated. The book includes:
- the opening address by Jean-Claude Trichet, President of the ECB, and contributions by Jürgen Stark and by José Manuel González-Páramo, members of the ECB’s Executive Board;
- keynote speeches by Joaquín Almunia, Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, European Commission, and by Stanley Fischer, Governor of the Bank of Israel; and
- the final versions of the papers and summaries of the discussions in each conference session.
The biennial ECB conferences on statistics provide a unique opportunity for dialogue between compilers and users of economic, monetary and financial statistics, including policy-makers, the media and the financial industry.
The publication can be downloaded from the “Publications” section of the ECB’s website (http://www.ecb.europa.eu/pub). Printed copies are also available from the ECB’s Press and Information Division at the address given below.
