Second conference on Gender and career progression

21 October 2019, Frankfurt am Main


The Bank of England, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and the European Central Bank are organising their second conference on Gender and career progression, to be held on 21 October 2019 at the European Central Bank. Sessions will focus primarily on issues encountered by women working in finance, economics and central banking. We want to convey the full diversity of women’s experiences in these professions, including intersectionality with race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and other categories.

Last year’s event was hosted by the Bank of England – Gender and Career Progression, 14-15 May 2018.

The conference will last for one day. The papers presented will be drawn from a variety of disciplines, methods and perspectives, and will be followed by panel discussions. Most papers will be academic-style research papers, but we also invite studies from practitioners that draw on experience in finance and economics.

Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to:

  • How can fields such as finance, economics and central banking better attract and retain women?
  • What are the factors that keep women from entering these fields and advancing in their careers?
  • What are the obstacles to greater diversity and inclusion in these fields, and what steps can be taken to overcome them?
  • How do organisations benefit from increased diversity and inclusion?

Submission of papers and deadlines

Participants will be selected on the basis of submitted papers or abstracts of about 500 words. The deadline for submissions is 15 May 2019. Authors chosen to present papers will be notified by 28 June 2019. Final drafts of the papers will be due on 4 October 2019.

The travel and accommodation expenses of the presenters of accepted papers and of discussants will be covered by the organisers (participants from the European System of Central Banks, the Federal Reserve System and European institutions will be expected to cover their own expenses).
