Use of cash by companies in the euro area

It is our mission to make sure that cash remains widely available, accessible and accepted as a means of payment. It is easier for us to do this if we have a good understanding of how cash is used in the euro area.

The ECB survey on the use of cash by euro area companies helps us understand what companies think about cash, providing insights into how they use it, their willingness to accept it and how they anticipate this developing in the future. It also sheds light on the ways companies withdraw and deposit cash.

Survey results - 2026

Do companies accept cash?

Cash remains widely accepted by companies across the euro area. Most companies (92%) that sell their goods and services at physical locations accept cash in 2026. The decline in cash acceptance experienced in recent years has paused.

One in three companies in the euro area have no preference on how their customers should pay at physical locations. 24% of companies prefer debit card payments, 21% prefer cash payments and 14% prefer credit card payments.

What makes companies accept a payment method?

The most important reasons for companies when choosing to accept a means of payment are customer preference (26%), security (22%) and ease of handling (15%).
