Ben S. Bernanke

Biography

Ben S. Bernanke is a Distinguished Fellow in Residence with the Economic Studies Program at the Brookings Institution and also serves as a Senior Advisor to PIMCO and Citadel.

He received a BA in economics from Harvard University in 1975 and a PhD. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1979. From 1985 to 2002, he was Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University. At Princeton he was also the Class of 1926 Professor of Economics and Public Affairs (1994 to 1996), and Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Economics and Public Affairs and Chair of the Economics Department (1996 to 2002). From 2002 to 2005 he was a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. From June 2005 to January 2006 he was Chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from February 2006 to January 2014.

Dr Bernanke has published articles on a wide variety of economic issues, including monetary policy and macroeconomics, and is the author of several books and two textbooks. In July 2001 he was appointed Editor of the American Economic Review. He served as the Director of the Monetary Economics Program of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and as a member of the NBER’s Business Cycle Dating Committee. He has held a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Sloan Research Fellowship, and is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
