Adair Turner

Biography

Lord Turner is Chairman of the Institute for New Economic Thinking, and a cross-bench member of the House of Lords.

He chaired the UK Financial Services Authority (2008-13) and led the redesign of the global banking and shadow banking regulation as Chairman of the International Financial Stability Board’s policy committee. He was the first Chairman of the UK Climate Change Committee (2008-12), and chaired the Independent Pensions Commission (2003-06) and the Low Pay Commission (2002-06); he also served as Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) (1995-2000). In 2015 he joined the Board of UK start-up bank OakNorth, and was appointed Non-Executive Director at Prudential plc. Previously he was at McKinsey & Co (1982-95), at Merrill Lynch Europe (Vice-Chairman, 2000-06) and at Standard Chartered (Non-Executive Director, 2006-08).

He is Senior Fellow at the Center for Financial Studies (Frankfurt); a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and at Cass Business School; Visiting Fellow at the People’s Bank of China School of Finance, Tsinghua University (Beijing); and Visiting Professor at the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (Kuala Lumpur). His latest book, Between Debt and the Devil, was published by Princeton in 2015. He is a regular contributor to Project Syndicate; his paper for the Sixteenth Jacques Polak Annual Research Conference, “The Case for Monetary Finance – An Essentially Political Issue”, will be published soon in the IMF Economic Review.
