Environmental protection at the ECB
For a European institution like the ECB it is only natural to look beyond borders, to focus on the medium and long term and to stress the importance of sustainability in every respect. The ECB therefore recognises that it has a duty to make a positive contribution to sustainable development.
Environmental and, more specifically, climate protection has become a general policy principle of the European Union. Climate change, the greenhouse effect and the need to cut emissions are serious global challenges. As a consequence of this, an increasing number of international organisations, government entities and commercial companies have adopted internal environmental strategies. The ECB is part of this movement.
Back in 2007 the ECB decided to take action in order to pursue environmental sustainability in a systematic manner. As a result, the ECB established a green initiative and adopted its first environmental policy. The aim of the ECB’s environmental policy is continuously to improve its environmental performance and to reduce its CO2 emissions. In order to achieve this, the ECB has implemented an Environmental Management System in accordance with the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and the ISO 14001 standard, which are applicable to all activities at the ECB’s main premises.
In the past few years the ECB has managed its resources in a more environmentally sustainable manner, in particular by raising awareness among management and staff, reducing consumption of natural resources and lowering CO2 emissions.
The ECB wants to be an environment-conscious institution. In its day-to-day operations it makes prudent use of natural resources to preserve the quality of the environment and protect human health. Through this approach, the ECB aims to encourage others to demonstrate their environmental awareness and corporate responsibility to staff, third parties and the general public.
