Innovating with the market

The Eurosystem is working with market participants to explore how the digital euro could support new payment experiences, services and business opportunities. This collaboration takes place through the digital euro innovation platform, an initiative bringing together stakeholders from across the private and public sectors.

New innovation platform activities

Findings from the first wave of activities within the digital euro innovation platform showed how the market could build on the digital euro’s core features to develop practical services and user experiences.

The Eurosystem is now taking this work forwards through a new wave of innovation platform activities, organised around two workstreams: experimentation and exploration. The activities will give market participants the opportunity to develop and test promising ideas and explore how emerging technologies could support new services and business opportunities in the future. 

Experimentation

Developing and testing novel features and services, such as:

  • electronic receipts in payment apps
  • payments split between several people or recipients
  • payments made when certain agreed conditions are met
  • new app features and services offered by payment service providers 
Exploration

Looking at technological developments and trends that could help the digital euro evolve over time, ensuring its infrastructure is ready to support further innovation, such as:

  • artificial intelligence in payments
  • digital euro payments in public services
  • innovative offline and user-centred features

Building on previous collaboration

The new activities build on the findings of the initial pioneers and visionaries workstreams within the digital euro innovation platform launched in 2024. Around 70 market participants worked with the Eurosystem to test conditional payments and explore innovative ideas for the digital euro. They helped identify areas where the digital euro could support innovation to address the needs of consumers and businesses.
