Otmar Issing

Biography

Otmar Issing is President of the Center for Financial Studies at the Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany. From 1998 to 2006 he was a Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank and between 1990 and 1998 he was a Member of the Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank, with a seat on the Central Bank Council. Prior to this he held the Chairs of Economics at the Universities of Würzburg and Erlangen-Nuremberg. From 1988- 1990 he was a member of the Council of Experts for the Assessment of Overall Economic Developments (Sachverständigenrat).

He is currently a member of the Aufsichtsrat Nürnberger Lebensversicherung AG und Fürst Fugger Privatbank, the Advisory Board of Globalisation and Monetary Policy Institute at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, the Euro50 Group, International Advisory Council of Bocconi University, Milan and the Council for the Future of Europe (Nicolas Berggruen Institute on Governance). He is Chairman of the University Council of Würzburg University and Chairman of the Kuratorium House of Finance, Goethe University, Frankfurt, as well as International Advisor to Goldman Sachs. He was Head of the Advisory Group on the New Financial Order appointed by Chancellor Merkel (2008-2012) and a member of the High-level Group of the European Commission chaired by Jacques De Larosière (2008-2010).

He received his degrees in economics at the University of Würzburg and has Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Bayreuth, Frankfurt and Konstanz, and was awarded the Laurea Honoris Causa in International Economic Integration from the University of Pavia. In 2009 he received the Große Verdienstkreuz des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. In the same year he was appointed Grand Officier de l´Ordre de Mérite du Grand-Duchè de Luxembourg.

His main areas of research are monetary and international economics and his main publications include The Birth of the Euro, 2008 (also published in German and Chinese); Einführung in die Geldtheorie, 15th ed., 2011 (translated into Chinese and Bulgarian). He has published articles in the Journal of Monetary Economics, Journal of Policy Modelling, International Finance, Journal of Common Market Studies, Economie Internationale, Kredit und Kapital, Jahrbücher für Nationalökonomie und Statistic and Monetary and Economic Studies.
