Schedules for the meetings of the Governing Council and General Council of the ECB

  1. In addition to its meetings scheduled for 13 October, 3 November and 1 December 1998, the Governing Council has agreed to hold a further meeting on 22 December 1998. The purpose of the meeting on 22 December 1998 will be to tidy up the remaining preparatory work. It is to be recalled that monetary policy decisions remain the responsibility of the national authorities until the end of 1998.
  2. The Governing Council has also agreed that in the first year of Stage Three (i.e. 1999) its meetings shall, as a rule, be scheduled to be held on Thursdays every other week, starting on 7 January 1999. Exceptions to this rule are envisaged to accommodate special holiday periods, namely Easter, Corpus Christi, the summer holiday period and New Year. As a result, the schedule for the meetings of the Governing Council is as follows:

  3. Furthermore, the General Council has agreed that the current practice of General Council meetings should be continued in Stage Three, i.e. quarterly meetings to be held on the same day as Governing Council meetings. The schedule for meetings of the General Council in 1999 is thus:
