Christoph M. Schmidt

Biography

Christoph M. Schmidt has been President of the Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung in Essen and Professor at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum since 2002.

He studied for his degree in economics at the University of Mannheim, before going on to obtain an MA in 1989 and PhD in 1991 at Princeton University. In 1995 he attained his Habilitation qualification at the University of Munich. From 1995 to 2002 he taught econometrics and labour economics as a Full Professor at the University of Heidelberg. In addition, he has been a Member of the German Council of Economic Experts since 2009 (serving as its Chair since March 2013) and since 2011 a Member of the Deutsche Akademie der Technikwissenschaften (and member of the Executive Board since 2014). Christoph M. Schmidt is associate editor of the Journal of Population Economics and of Perspektiven der Wirtschaftspolitik, and a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of Wirtschaftsdienst.

The main areas of his research are applied econometrics and a broad spectrum of economic policy-related topics, specifically macroeconomics, energy, health and labour. He has published in journals such as The Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Public Economics, European Economic Review, Journal of Economic and Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.
