The construction works for the new premises of the European Central Bank (ECB) will start in spring 2010. The "Structural works" package consists of the structural works for all the buildings comprising the new ECB premises, the requisite steelwork and the restoration of the Grossmarkthalle.
The structural design of the two office towers is based on reinforced concrete frame constructions. The north tower will consist of 45 floors and the south tower 43. Steel trusses and connecting platforms in the atrium join the two towers together to create a single static structure.
A large part of the construction works focuses on the restoration of the Grossmarkthalle, which was built according to the design of Professor Martin Elsaesser during the period 1926-28. The basic appearance of the Grossmarkthalle will be maintained, with the facades and surfaces being restored in line with the preservation order.
The new functional facilities of the ECB – conference and visitors’ centre, staff restaurant, cafeteria and press conference area – will be integrated into the hall as individual internal buildings (house-in-house concept) and will be constructed as a reinforced concrete composite structure
The structural works are due for completion by spring 2012.
