Europe stands for unity in diversity, for common roots and individual forms of expression, and for shared traditions and regional variations. As 2008 marks the tenth anniversary of the European Central Bank (ECB), this year’s CULTURAL DAYS were dedicated not to a single country, but rather to the whole of the European Union and its 27 Member States. The programme ranged from literature, cinematography, classical music and jazz to photography, dance and art.
The grand opening concert on 14 May was the first event to reflect the European Union’s many voices: the folk song traditions of all of the 27 Member States were brought together in a new arrangement presented by the EuropaChorAkademie at the Alte Oper, Frankfurt.
In the weeks leading up to 2 June, when a grand concert by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe was held to mark the tenth anniversary of the European System of Central Banks, a series of events explored the mythology, fairy tales, art, song and stories that have characterised Europe from the time of Homer to the modern film age.
A “Fairy Tale Festival” of some 20 events created a European world of fantasy, while great works of literature written in Europe’s less widely spoken languages were presented in a comprehensive series of readings. The European dance platform, staged this year for the first time, offered a glimpse into Europe’s contemporary dance scene.
At the heart of Europe lie its ideas and creativity: the CULTURAL DAYS of the ECB - EU 2008 in Frankfurt am Main bore witness to that.
