SMCube Information Model

The Single Multidimensional Metadata Model (SMCube) is used to define the structure of a group of datasets that have been compiled following different modelling methodologies (e.g. SDMX, DPM/XBRL). The model establishes a new level of abstraction in addition to the original approaches so that the different datasets can be used in combination. The model was developed by the ECB.

The SMCube methodology serves as the basis for the construction of metadata and provides the structure for metadata-driven systems.

The SMCube is used for the Single Data Dictionary (SDD) – an ECB internal data dictionary which describes the different datasets used at the ECB – and for the Banks’ Integrated Reporting Dictionary (BIRD) – a joint ECB, national central bank and banking industry initiative that provides a precise description of the data that must be extracted and the rules for transforming the data to generate reports.
