Event to mark the end of Jean-Claude Trichet’s term as President of the European Central Bank

On 19 October 2011, 1,800 invited guests and ECB staff members came together at the Alte Oper for the official event to mark the end of Mr Trichet’s mandate. Among those in attendance were a number of current and former heads of state and government, finance ministers, central bank governors, the IMF’s Managing Director as well as the heads of the European Parliament, the European Commission, the European Council and the Eurogroup.
The event closed with the symbolic passing of the baton from Mr Trichet to Mr Draghi, in the form of the chairman’s bell that Jean-Claude Trichet himself had received from Mr Duisenberg eight years previously.
