Capital Markets and Financial Integration in Europe Network

Three main research areas

This network was launched by the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Center for Financial Studies (CFS) in April 2002. It aims to coordinate and stimulate top-level policy-relevant research that contributes to our understanding of capital markets and financial integration.

  1. European financial integration
  2. Financial system structures in Europe
  3. Linkages between the euro area/EU, the United States and Japan

Current focus

The current focus is on the development of European debt market structures and financial market linkages to the US and Japan. The organisers believe that these issues are insufficiently researched and therefore not well understood. The results expected from the network are likely to be of interest to policymakers and financial market participants throughout Europe.

The three top priority areas are:

  • financial systems as risk managers and risk distributors;
  • integration and development of retail financial services and the promotion of innovative firms;
  • financial modernisation, governance and the integration of the European financial system in global capital markets.

Participation

The network involves researchers from academia, central banks and international organisations.

The organisers invite leading academic and policy-oriented researchers to join the network on a mutually beneficial basis:

The network

  • provides funding for meetings and conferences (jointly with local organisers)
  • maintains a network website
  • acts as a go-between for academic and central bank network members.

Contributors are expected to:

  • produce original research in the field of the network
  • present it in workshops and conferences
  • make it available on the network’s website
  • publish the results in leading journals.
