Hélène Rey

Biography

Hélène Rey is the Lord Raj Bagri Professor of Economics at London Business School.

Until 2007, she was at Princeton University, as Professor of Economics and International Affairs in the Economics Department and the Woodrow Wilson School. In 2005 she was awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship. She has been the recipient of many prizes, including: the Bernácer Prize (2007); the inaugural Birgit Grodal Award of the European Economic Association (2012); the Yrjö Jahnsson Award, shared with Thomas Piketty (2013); the inaugural Carl Menger Prize (2014); and the Edouard Bonnefous Foundation Prize (Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques) (2015). Professor Rey is an elected Fellow of the British Academy, the Econometric Society, the European Economic Association and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She was on the board of The Review of Economic Studies (2008-15) and is an associate editor of the American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics. She is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). She is a member of the Haut Conseil de stabilité financière (French Macroprudential Authority), the Commission économique de la Nation and the Bellagio Group on the international economy.

Her research focuses on the determinants and consequences of external trade and financial imbalances, the theory of financial crises and the organisation of the international monetary system. She demonstrated in particular that countries’ gross external asset positions help predict current account adjustments and exchange rates. She has had articles published in numerous journals, in particular The Review of Economic Studies, the American Economic Review, The Quarterly Journal of Economics and the Journal of Political Economy.
