The Frankfurt Radio Symphony will bring a taste of Spain to the banks of the river Main, just behind the ECB’s main building. Award-winning conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, together with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, will take the audience on an evocative journey through Spain’s cultural heritage with pieces by composers such as Ravel, Rimskij-Korsakow, Chapí and Giménez. This promises to be a magical evening including, among other spectacular performances, a rendition of de Falla’s enchanting “Nights in the Garden of Spain”, with pianist Javier Perianes. Frankfurt Radio Big Band, directed by Valencian-born saxophonist Perico Sambea, and the talented Catalan singer Alba Carmona will kick off this special event with contemporary jazz, featuring swing rhythms and a touch of flamenco passion!

¡Flamenco!

Flamenco
The inherently proud art of flamenco is perhaps the most well-known and representative modern-day depiction of Spain’s rich and varied folklore. Music, touch and dance constitute the key elements of flamenco. Over the centuries, this dynamic genre has combined traditional and newer elements to become the art we know today. Feelings dominate performances, taking the audience on a journey through moments of joy, pain and even fear. People from all over the world are struck by the intensity and repetitive rhythms of the Zapateado (traditional dance and music from Andalusia), the grief in the vocalisations and the distinctive timbre of flamenco guitar strings. In 2010 UNESCO declared flamenco an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. The evening will see authentic flamenco singers, dancers and musicians bring the heart of this art to Frankfurt with extraordinary choreography.

Closing Concert

  • Tuesday, 12 December 2017, 20:00, Alte Oper Frankfurt
  • Reina Sofía School of Music
  • Banco de España Arriaga Ensemble & Beatriz Oleaga
Closing Concert
Meet the inspiring young musicians from the Reina Sofía School of Music, one of the most prestigious music schools in Spain, founded in 1995 by Queen Sofia. This talented group has won several distinguished awards, including “most outstanding chamber music group” in 2010. Paul Goodwin, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Carmel Bach Festival in California, will conduct this concert and combine his passion for creating dynamic programmes with more traditional symphonic repertoire to bring a taste of Spanish history and culture to Frankfurt. This closing concert will include performances from an array of quintets, sextets and chamber ensembles; with piano and violin accompaniment and folk songs sung by mezzosoprano Beatriz Oleaga. These vibrant performances will feature music by Enrique Granados, Manuel de Falla, Luigi Bocherini, Eduard Toldrá and Pablo Sarasate.

About the Cultural Days

The European Union (EU) has its foundations in shared ideas and values, while also being home to a rich and varied array of cultures, made up of the traditions of the individual countries and regions. The EUROPEAN CULTURAL DAYS of the ECB provide an opportunity to celebrate this “unity in diversity”.

EUROPEAN CULTURAL DAYS of the ECB

Mario Draghi, President of the ECB

“Working together to enhance awareness of a country’s cultural heritage that is part of our roots and our identity offers a good opportunity to educate and prepare future generations, who will have a key role in strengthening cohesiveness and community spirit and in deciding the way in which the European institutions will develop. The mission of the EUROPEAN CULTURAL DAYS fully meets this aim.”

Each year, the EUROPEAN CULTURAL DAYS of the ECB focus on a different Member State of the European Union. Towards the end of the year Frankfurt am Main becomes the setting for many high-quality artistic performances, ranging from music, dance and theatre to art lectures and exhibitions, literary events and films, as well as events for children. The ECB organises the CULTURAL DAYS together with the national central bank of the featured country and with the support of its many partners, who are committed to promoting European arts and culture.
