European banking supervision traineeship programme

If you are interested in banking supervision and hold at least a bachelor’s degree in one of many relevant disciplines, then you should apply for this one-year traineeship programme.

Applications for the 2017 programme are now closed.

What will I learn?

You will gain practical knowledge about banking supervision while working in an international team responsible for supervising some of the biggest banks in Europe. For example, you may be involved in analysing a bank’s risk appetite or reviewing its internal governance rules.

You will work under the guidance of a team coordinator while also participating in a dedicated training programme which focuses on technical and behavioural skills. Some of the courses provided include effective business writing, communicating across cultures and an introduction to the governance of European banking supervision.

Where will I be based?

As a trainee you will get a chance to work and live in up to three different countries. At the beginning and end of the programme, you will be based at the ECB in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Over the course of the year you will complete up to two assignments with national supervisory authorities in participating countries.

How will I develop my career?

The programme offers excellent development opportunities. After completing the traineeship you will have valuable experience in banking supervision and will also be part of a network of former trainees.

What do current trainees have to say about the programme?

Sami

A key part of the job is the prudential supervisory analysis. This involves taking into consideration the bank’s risk profile, risk appetite and governance arrangements. With its specialised training and external assignments, the programme has given me an excellent platform to learn about supervision and put this knowledge into practice.

Marine

Our trainee group has a very collaborative mentality. Whenever someone has an issue or a question, whether related to the work or regarding the traineeship in general, there is always someone who can offer a solution or advice based on their own experience.

Simon

European banking supervision is based on the cooperation between the ECB and national authorities. The traineeship allows us to understand how this cooperation works in practice. Even though the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) aims to create convergence in the supervisory approach, it is still interesting to see the main areas of concern in different countries and the cultural differences around banking supervision.
