This page provides an overview of the development of the MFI sector in the European Union (EU) since the start of Stage Three of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).
For each month, based on the latest published "List of MFIs and institutions subject to minimum reserves" the MFI sector is broken down by country of residence and into the following categories: central banks, credit institutions, money market funds and other institutions. A table shows the absolute number of MFIs and the most recent changes, i.e. joiners, leavers and changes in attributes, broken down by country of residence and by category. This is complemented by a detailed list of individual institutions which have joined or left the MFI sector, in the European Union.
The European Central Bank establishes and regularly updates two lists: a "List of Monetary Financial Institutions for statistical purposes" on a daily basis, and a "List of MFIs and institutions subject to minimum reserves" on a monthly basis. Both lists together with detailed information on the individual institutions are released to the public on the ECB's website. Both the daily and monthly Internet releases can be downloaded as text-delimited files or user-defined queries can be performed directly from the EBC's website. Explanatory notes, available as pdf files on this page, provide further explanations and definitions. Users can perform their own analysis through queries and by means of comparisons with previous releases on the ECB's website.
