This section provides a comprehensive set of time series on sectoral data for loans, deposits and holdings of securities, referring to the MFI sector, broken down by maturity, type and content. Please refer to Regulation ECB/2008/32 (see link on the right-hand side) for definitions of the instruments and categories adopted in these statistics.
Some series were reported on a quarterly frequency for the periods up to and including December 2002 and on a monthly frequency thereafter. For these series, monthly observations for the periods from January 1999 to December 2002 have been derived from available quarterly and monthly series by using standard interpolation techniques. These historical data are not subject to the regular monthly revision policy adopted for monetary statistics, but to an ad hoc revision procedure triggered by the revision of the quarterly and monthly series used as reference variables in the derivation of these data. The procedure yields a series of monthly stocks and transactions. Consequently, the growth rates are derived by using the standard procedure adopted for MFI balance sheet statistics.
Three data sources are used to derive the euro area aggregates: (i) actual national monthly data provided by some NCBs; (ii) national monthly series by type of sector derived by NCBs from quarterly data; (iii) national monthly series by type of sector derived by the ECB from actual national monthly series with no sectoral breakdown and quarterly series with desired sectoral breakdown.
