The ECB will host the 7th joint ECB/CEPR labour market workshop on 16-17 December 2010 on the topic of “Unemployment developments after the crisis”. As the economy recovers from the economic downturn, understanding the ways in which labour markets in Europe as well as in other industrialised countries respond and adjust is of fundamental importance. Suitable research topics for paper submissions include the following:

• Dynamics of unemployment: How does unemployment, and particularly long-run unemployment, adjust to a slowdown in economic activity? Is there symmetry between upturns and downturns? Have these adjustment mechanisms changed in the current crisis environment? What explains variations of unemployment dynamics across countries? Do imperfections in housing and financial markets and low geographical mobility raise the persistence of unemployment fluctuations? What is the role of labour market institutions in explaining unemployment dynamics?
• The medium-term impact of unemployment: What is the impact of different pattern of employment and unemployment for productivity and long-term growth? How have adjustment strategies over the crisis in terms of labour versus productivity adjustment affected potential output? What is the impact of unemployment and dual labour markets on poverty and income inequality?
• The impact of reforms and policies on employment: A series of structural reforms and policies have been implemented in European countries. To what extent can they contribute to employment growth? Will these reforms foster a quick recovery in unemployment after the crisis? How helpful is the modelling of reforms for forecasting employment, output growth and inflation?

We welcome submissions that apply theoretical or empirical tools to analyse and project developments in the labour market.

We invite researchers wishing to submit their original contributions for presentation at this workshop to apply online and indicate whether or not you wish to present a paper. The deadline for replies is 18:00 GMT on Wednesday 24th September 2010.
