Malta’s adoption of the euro on 1 January 2008 will be a milestone in its economic development. As final preparations get under way for the transition, the National Euro Changeover Committee and the Central Bank of Malta, in cooperation with the European Commission and the European Central Bank, have organised a high-level international conference entitled “EMU Governance & Euro Changeover: Malta on the path to the euro” in Valletta on 1 October 2007.
The speakers include Mr Lawrence Gonzi (Prime Minister and Minister of Finance), Mr Jean-Claude Trichet (President of the European Central Bank), Mr Joaquín Almunia (European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs), Mr Michael C Bonello, (Governor of the Central Bank of Malta) and Mr Athanasios Orphanides (Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus).
